Surma (Suri) & Omo Valley Tribes Tour 10-Days
Day 1: Addis Ababa → Jimma → Mizan Teferi
Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Jimma, the gateway to Ethiopia’s coffee region and the road to the Surma tribes’ land, Kibish. From here, you’ll drive toward Mizan Teferi, passing through verdant forests and rolling hills dotted with coffee plantations. Along the way, there will be opportunities for short photography stops and light cultural interactions, offering a gentle introduction to the landscapes and rhythms of rural Ethiopia. This day serves as a transition from the bustle of urban Ethiopia into the greener, more remote highlands.

Day 2: Mizan Teferi → Kibish (Surma Territory)
An early departure drive will take you deeper into the remote western frontier of the Omo region. The drive to Kibish is long and rugged, underscoring the isolation of the Surma people. Upon arrival, your local guide will facilitate introductions and explain protocols for respectful visitation and photography. In the afternoon, you’ll visit a Surma village to experience daily life, cattle culture, and traditional homesteads.

Day 3: Surma Tribe (Suri) Cultural Tour
This day is devoted to a full immersion into Surma traditions. You’ll participate in natural body painting using local pigments, learn about the lip-plate custom among Surma women, and visit cattle camps to observe milking, grooming rituals, and scarification practices. Cattle are central to Surma identity. If in season, you may witness the dramatic Donga stick dueling, a ceremonial stick-fighting contest between different villages and a show of status. Photography often requires a negotiated fee per subject, and your guide will assist with this process.

Day 4: Kibish → Omo National Park
Leave Kibish in the morning and drive to enter Omo National Park, one of Africa’s least-visited and most pristine ecosystems. Unlike East Africa’s famous safari parks, wildlife here is shy and sparse, but the sense of untouched wilderness is unparalleled. Sweeping savannah plains, river valleys, and pristine bushland stretch before you, with possible sightings of buffalo, giraffe, eland, kudu, zebra, warthog, and diverse birdlife. You’ll settle into a wilderness campsite or bush lodge inside the park for the night.

Day 5: Omo National Park → Nyangatom → Karo → Turmi
An early morning game drive offers a chance to spot wildlife before continuing eastward into the Omo Valley. You’ll visit the Nyangatom tribe, known for their colorful beadwork and distinctive lip tattoos, before meeting the Karo people, masters of elaborate body painting and perched dramatically on cliffs overlooking the Omo River. A picnic lunch along the riverbank provides a scenic pause before driving onward to Turmi, home of the Hamar people.

Day 6: Omorate (Dassanech Tribe) → Turmi (Hamar Experience)
Today begins with a drive to Omorate near the Kenyan border, where you’ll cross the Omo River by local boat to visit the Dassanech tribe, whose culture is deeply tied to the river. Returning to Turmi for lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to the Hamar people. You’ll explore a Hamar village, learning about their ochre hairstyles, body decoration, and cattle traditions. If fortunate, you may witness a Bull-Jumping Ceremony, a key rite of passage for Hamar men, though this is not guaranteed and requires a ceremonial fee.

Day 7: Turmi → Key Afer → Jinka
Travel toward Jinka through the territory of the Banna people. If the day falls on a Thursday, you will visit the Key Afer market, one of the most vibrant tribal markets in the region. This is a central meeting point for the Banna, Ari, and Hamar tribes to trade livestock and local goods. In the afternoon, Martket in Jinka/

Day 8: Jinka → Mago National Park → Mursi → Jinka
Travel north through Mago National Park to reach a remote Mursi village. Nestled among mountains and river valleys, the Mursi live in one of Ethiopia’s most isolated regions. Their settlements are made up of wood-and-grass huts arranged around shared communal spaces. Here, you’ll meet the Mursi—one of the most recognized groups in the Omo Valley, especially noted for the clay lip plates worn by women. Traditionally, the Mursi are semi-nomadic pastoralists who depend heavily on their cattle for milk, blood, and social status. Drive back to Jinka while enjoying the scenery of Mago National Park along the way.

Day 9: Jinka → Konso → Arba Minch
In the morning, depart Jinka and drive to Arba Minch. On the way, you’ll explore Konso Village, a UNESCO-recognized Cultural Landscape, which offers a striking contrast to the lowland tribes. Fortified Konso villages, ancient terraced farmlands, and traditional wagas (wooden grave markers) reveal a unique cultural heritage. After lunch, continue the drive through the scenic Rift Valley to reach Arba Minch.

Day 10: Arba Minch → Dorze Village → Addis Ababa
On your final day, you’ll visit the Dorze people in the Guge Mountains, renowned for their towering bamboo beehive-shaped houses and fine cotton weaving traditions. Experience their unique culinary heritage by tasting kocho (false-banana bread) and enjoying traditional music and dance performances. After returning to Arba Minch for lunch, you’ll take an afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa.
