Omo Valley tribes and Danakil Depression Adventure

Discover two of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary destinations on this unforgettable journey combining authentic cultural encounters with the tribes of the Omo Valley and an extreme expedition into the Danakil Depression, one of the most unique landscapes on Earth. This adventure blends tribal traditions, dramatic desert scenery, and volcanic exploration for an unparalleled travel experience.

DAY 1: ADDIS ABABA TO JINKA AND THE MURSI TRIBE

Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka. Upon arrival at Jinka Airport, drive immediately to a Mursi village. The Mursi, a distinctive ethnic group of the Lower Omo Valley, are famous for the clay plates (lip plates) worn by their women, which symbolize beauty and cultural identity. While primarily pastoralists, they also practice flood-retreat agriculture along the Omo River. We will observe their intricate body painting, scarification, and learn about their age-set social structure. Drive back to Jinka in the late afternoon.

DAY 2: JINKA TO OMORATE, VISITING DASSANECH TRIBES

Drive south to Turmi. The journey takes us through the traditional lands of the Bena and Tsemai tribes before arriving in Turmi, the heartland of the Hamer people. In the afternoon, continue driving to Omorate, situated on the banks of the Omo River. Here, we take a local boat across the river to visit a Dassanech village. The Dassanech are renowned for their unique and intricate personal adornments, often created using repurposed materials. After our visit, we return to Turmi.

DAY 3: KARO TRIBE AND HAMER CULTURE IMMERSION

Drive to Korcho village to visit the Karo tribe. As one of the smallest ethnic groups in the Omo Valley, the Karo are famous for their elaborate and intricate body painting, utilizing locally sourced white chalk, black charcoal, yellow mineral rock, and red ochre to express beauty and social status. They are primarily flood-retreat agriculturists, hunters, and fishermen along the Omo River banks. The afternoon is dedicated to an immersive experience with the Hamer tribe. We will either visit a traditional Hamer village to observe their daily life, or, if available, attend a vibrant local tribal market or witness the spectacular Bull Jumping Ceremony.

DAY 4: JINKA TO ADDIS ABABA

In the morning, drive from your accommodation to Jinka Airport for your scheduled domestic flight back to Addis Ababa. Use the afternoon to relax or explore the local cafes and crafts of the capital city as you transition from the southern heat to the central highlands.

DAY 5: ADDIS ABABA – SEMERA – LAKE ASSALE

In the morning, fly from Addis Ababa to Semera, followed by a rugged 4×4 group tour deep into the Danakil Depression. The drive crosses stark desert landscapes before reaching the base camp at Ahmedela Village near the salt flats of Lake Assale (Lake Karum), one of the lowest points on Earth. Explore the vast, mirror-like salt crusts and witness Afar salt miners carving blocks of salt by hand—the same method used for centuries—before loading them onto long camel caravans bound for the highlands. Enjoy the sunset at the lake reflecting the sky. As this is true desert travel, tonight’s accommodation is a simple overnight camp at base camp, sleeping on basic mattresses under the open sky or inside traditional Afar shelters.

DAY 6: DALLOL IN DANAKIL DEPRESSION & ERTA ALE VOLCANO

The day begins early with a drive to Dallol at the lowest point in the Danakil Depression to explore its otherworldly geothermal formations before the desert heat reaches its peak. Dallol is a kaleidoscope of color—surreal hot springs, steaming acid pools, and sculpted mineral terraces in shades of neon yellow, red, and green. Return to base for lunch, then continue driving across ancient lava fields toward Erta Ale, Ethiopia’s most active volcano. After a little rest, begin the evening ascent—an adventurous 30-minute trek across volcanic terrain—to reach the summit after dark. At the top, a rare spectacle awaits: the glowing caldera of Erta Ale.

Note: Following a big eruption in July 2025, the molten lava flow at Erta Ale Volcano is no longer visible.

DAY 7: SUNRISE AT ERTA ALE VOLCANO – SEMERA – ADDIS ABABA

Awake early and walk up for a breathtaking sunrise over the crater, watching the landscape shift colors as the desert warms. Following this, you trek back to your camp for breakfast. After a relaxed morning, board the 4x4s for the drive to Lake Afdera to swim in a salty lake and shower in the nearby freshwater hot spring. Then drive to Semera. Upon arrival, you will transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, which marks the end of your trip to the Danakil Depression. End of Tour
